Religion and Geopolitics Review: Saturday, August 12

by Dr. David Pence and A. Joseph Lynch

THE WEEKLY BRIEF
THE STAKES IN NORTH KOREA Kim Jong Un, the 34 yr old leader of North Korea, is not old enough to be a US President. Like 31 yr old Mohammad bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, he has brought a young man's assertiveness to his country's foreign policy. North Korea has 25 million people while South Korea has 50 million people in a land mass 5/6 of North Korea. China with 1.4 billion people and Japan with 126 million people are neighbors with histories of conquering this ancient people. Both South Koreans and North Koreans believe a united Korea is the eventual political goal and Koreans on both sides of the 38th believe Korea needs the technology of advanced weapons to balance the threats of their larger neighbors. All of those considerations have nothing to do with America.

Turning to the US, the North Koreans see South Koreans as their countrymen in occupied territory. Kim Jong Un notes that when a small nation like Libya gave up their nuclear weapons, the leader was soon decapitated (Gadaffi killed in 2011 after US inspired NATO intrusion in country). He sees a hostile American Congress to Iran even after Iran gave up weapons grade uranium in a deal sanctioned by Europe, Russia and China. Korea has been split along the 38th parallel since the end of WWII. In the Korean War of 1950-1953, the Chinese allied with the North Koreans after American led UN troops drove to the Yalu River-a demarcation of China and North Korea. More than 80% of North Korean trade is with China. In Asia, Kim Jong Un is not a great statesman but he is a real leader.  He is most definitely not seen as a crazy little oriental dictator ridiculed by the Hollywood media and then cyber-revenged in real life.  It is not at all clear that a US attack on North Korea would be seen by the Chinese as anything but continued border infringement by US. It didn't help when on Aug 10 US warships sailed within 12 miles of the new Chinese airfields on the man made isle they have constructed to display their claims in the South China Sea. Henry Kissinger warned in his book China that the most likely scenario for China going to war would be infringement on their borders or foreign encroachment on a neighboring country. China has much more in common with North Korea trying to defend itself than the US projecting culture and weapons 7000 miles away from our homeland.  North Korea is not targeting the continental US  or Asian population centers.  Much better strategic targets are the unpopular US military bases throughout Asia and 160,000 US citizens on Guam next to Anderson Air base.  Guam has been called "an aircraft carrier posing as an island".

The US wants this conflict to be seen as a young bellicose dictator disrupting Asian stability and threatening world order. North Korea wants to depict the US as a continuing reminder of the 19th century of shame when western white nations colonized and disrespected all the great civilizations of Asia. It is doubtful that North Korea would aim its firepower at Asian populations--- not even their traditional enemy Japan. They say to China (and they whisper to nuclear armed Pakistan), "Why is the one country in human history who laid waste to Asian population centers with nuclear weapons now contesting  Chinese borders, emasculating Japan and South Korea with military occupations, and threatening us because we are developing nuclear weapons to deter them? Is there no man or country to resist them and reclaim our honor?"  The Philippines have a strong leader who is establishing order at home and has changed sides in the China-US dispute over Chinese territory claims in the South China Sea. This geopolitical transformation of a once dependable ally in Asia is treated in the US press as an opportunity to scold the elected Rodrigo Duterte as a sexist and a thug. We must see the Asian nations and their leaders clearly. The division of Korea is the last "nation tragedy" of the Cold War. If Russia, China and the US cannot come to a long overdue real Cold War peace than once again the small nations will serve as killing grounds. It will be full of sound and fury.   And it may well "signify nothing."

I. POPE FRANCIS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

POPE FRANCIS S.J. IS NOT JAMES MARTIN S.J. Deacon Jim Russell at Catholic World Report e explains how the Pope sees the Trans-Gender movement as anti-ecology.

The New York Times reported this in August 2016 better than Catholic conservatives:
"Leaders of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups expressed dismay on Wednesday after Pope Francis said that schoolchildren are being taught they can choose their gender as part of what he called an “ideological colonization.”

Francis was meeting privately with bishops in Poland last week when he broached the matter. “Today, in schools they are teaching this to children — to children! — that everyone can choose their gender,” he said, according to a transcript released by the Vatican on Tuesday.

Marianne Duddy-Burke, the executive director of DignityUSA, a leading organization of L.G.B.T. Catholics, said the comments represented a “dangerous ignorance” about gender identity, which is no more a choice than height or hair color.

“It’s very troubling that the pope would say this,” Ms. Duddy-Burke said on Wednesday. “It also shows that the pope doesn’t understand the danger that his words can mean for gender-nonconforming people, particularly those who live in countries with laws or cultural pressures that put these people at risk for violence.”
VATICAN OPENING TO RUSSIA: Top diplomat goes to Russia. This is a priority that the Pope and the President share. Forget the Jesuit and Protestant journalists who do not understand America. Watch the actions of the Pope and his diplomatic corps.

A CATHOLIC STATESMAN: An Englishman with a top hat and six kids.

CATHOLICS AND/OR AMERICANS: Smirak on Chaput.

THE TRANSFIGURATION AND POPE PAUL VI: A profound Christological and historical reflection.

THE PARISH - THINK COSMICALLY AND ACT LOCALLY; THE BENEDICT OPTION IN PRACTICE: Reflection of August 4, Memorial of St John Vianney. Fr George Rutler - advice for a young priest.

MILITARY AND SEMINARIES - WHY ALL-MALE INSTITUTIONS HAD FEMINIST SPEECH CODES: From Peggy Noonan on generals and admirals:
"On social issues they generally tend to be moderate to liberal. I have never to my knowledge met a high officer who was pro-life. They largely thought Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell a reasonable policy, but they’re realists: Time moves on, salute and execute. They don’t want to damage or retard their careers being on the wrong side of issues whose outcomes seem culturally inevitable. You don’t die on a hill that is not central to the immediate mission."
There was no place in American culture where honest discussion of sex roles was shut down earlier and more definitively than the military. To speak against women soldiers could be a career ending statement showing inability to "lead the new modern army." Catholic all-male seminaries experienced the same paradox. If seminarians (candidates for the priesthood) spoke too loudly against women priests that was taken as evidence those "rigid" fellows were incapable of "working collaboratively with the newly empowered laity." The all male seminary forbade assertively masculine public discussion. Military bases where even intramural sports teams had to be female inclusive were similar to the seminaries--these male groups could not speak AS MEN in public speech.

II. ISLAM AND THE MIDDLE EAST

A NEW ONLINE VIDEO VOICE LOOKING AT 9/11 AND SAUDI ARABIA: A video laying out a few basics.

PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS AND MIDEAST: A book review and AOA essay in the StarTribune stressing the obligation of our Christian nation to protect Christians.

RUSSIA, CHINA, EUROPE, AND BRITAIN GO TO IRAN INAUGURATION - WHOSE NOT COMING TO DINNER? The US policy of ignoring civic functions of crucial nations  deprives us of ritual  acts of international diplomacy that a nation state must employ to build fraternity among peoples. Saudi Arabia and Israel are both at war with Iran. We are not.

III. AMERICAN POLITICS AND FOREIGN POLICY

SCANDALS TO INVESTIGATE NOT MANUFACTURE: Real stories seeking light from Victor Davis Hanson.

MCMASTER CLEANING HOUSE AT NSC - AN OBJECTION FROM ISRAELI RIGHT: Everything that bothers Carolyn Glick here. Seems like a useful and necessary balance in American policy. Israel's intent is to ally with Saudi Arabia and bring down the Shia government of Iran. That should not be US policy.

IN RUSSIA: A Statue to Gorbachev and Reagan.

WHILE IN THE US - CONGRESS SANCTIONS LAW HOBBLES EXECUTIVE AND STRIKES OUR EUROPEAN ALLIES: Europe Uneasy as Congress lets its anti-Trump anger hamper American diplomacy.

TRUMP IS LOSING HIS RUSSIA POLICY TO REPUBLICAN STAFF AND MILITARY HAWKS: Buchanan explains. When will an anti-war Democrat or a Christian public intellectual come to the President's aid and shake off the grip of the war interests? Listening to the effeminate Lindsey Graham talking about destroying North Korea should raise the ire of every Christian man and honest patriot. Asians will not think US bombing of an Asian population(North Korea) is an act of protection. Emotionally many see the antics of North Korea the way their ancestors saw the Japanese defeat of Russia in 1905 - finally a yellow nation resisting the white foreigners. Unfortunately Diversity Training has not yet taught American policymakers to see the world through the eyes of other countries and cultures.

THE COLLUSION TO OVERTHROW THE AMERICAN ELECTION: It is not the Russians but illegal "spies and traitors" inside the government in collusion with the major East Coast media who are engaged in illegal acts trying to overthrow the legitimately elected President Trump. Did the Washington Post have a "duty" to publicize transcripts of presidential calls? Doesn't that greatly reduce the ability of the President to deal with foreign leaders in a trusting confidential manner which makes war and conflict less likely?

REVEREND HILLARY: Will Mrs. Clinton turn to Methodist preaching?

IV. CULTURE OF LIFE, CULTURE OF PROTECTION

HITTINGER ON DAWSON AND SAVING THE WEST: An essay from the Imaginative Conservative.

BLACKS, THE IRISH, AND BOXING: The way men should write sports stories. he is a white writer in the black press. Multiple white editors would not take his piece.

A NOVEL FOR OUR TIME - THE POSSESSED BY DOSTOEVSKY: From a review of the novel:
"In late 1860s Russia there was an unusual level of political unrest caused by student groups influenced by liberal, socialist and revolutionary ideas imported from Europe. In 1869, Dostoevsky conceived the idea of a 'pamphlet novel' directed against the radicals."

According to translator Richard Pevear, the demons are "that legion of isms that came to Russia from the West: idealism, rationalism, empiricism, materialism, utilitarianism, positivism, socialism, anarchism, nihilism, and, underlying them all, atheism."

The counter-ideal to the demons (expressed in the novel through the character of Ivan Shatov) is that of an authentically Russian culture growing out of the people's inherent spirituality and faith.

In a letter to a friend, Dostoevsky alludes to the episode of the Exorcism of the Gerasene demoniac in the Gospel of Luke as the inspiration for the title: "Exactly the same thing happened in our country: the devils went out of the Russian man and entered into a herd of swine... These are drowned or will be drowned, and the healed man, from whom the devils have departed, sits at the feet of Jesus."
An important correction of the title from another book review:
The title is a case in point. The Russian word means evil spirits, not the people possessed by them. Had Dostoevsky wanted to name this work "The Possessed," he could easily have done so, Russian having an exact equivalent. There is also a perfectly good Russian word for devils, and it is not the word Dostoevsky chose to use.

"Demons" is the Dostoevsky novel for our age; in fact, it is a key novel as such for an age that has come to recognize the evils of ideology--any ideology. At the time it appeared in Russia, it could be read as the other sort of "key novel," a roman a clef , based as it was on the ideologically rationalized murder of a party member who had strayed from the fold. Millions and millions of ideologically rationalized murders later, it is infinitely more timely. Dostoevsky could not be published at all in the Soviet Union during the Stalinist years, and even in the relatively liberal post-Stalinist period this novel remained taboo and thus virtually unavailable in popular editions. Now that Russia has renounced its ideology it is being read with a vengeance: "Demons" tells Russia's story in microcosm, and in advance.

V. AROUND THE WORLD R&G ROUND UP

MODI AND FOREIGN RELATIONS: A review.

AP REPORTER ON LEAVING: Venezuela.  In South America, the capitalism vs. communism debate is an atheist knot to be untied by a host of Catholic Bolivar/Peron/Franco nationalists rising in each country to ally with a Christian nationalist United States to the north. Establishing police order and justice in land and labor are paramount.

Religion, Nations, and Geopolitical Review: SATURDAY, JULY 6

by A. Joseph Lynch
& Past Commentary of Dr. David Pence

THE WEEKLY BRIEF
PRESIDENT TRUMP VISITS NORTH KOREA

President Trump made history as the first sitting U.S. president to set foot in North Korea. This is a near miraculous turn around from where we were when Trump was elected in November 2016. While North Korea has not yet given up its nuclear weapons, the missile tests - which would lead to its ability to attack the U.S. - have stopped.

Neither the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un nor the president's brief entrance into North Korea had not been scheduled. Pursuing his strategy of "nation-to-nation, leader-to-leader discussions" President Trump made masterful use of Twitter to suggest a meeting: "After some very important meetings, including my meeting with President Xi of China, I will be leaving Japan for South Korea (with President Moon). While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!" The president's background in business - where personal relationships are extremely important - are paying dividends in our nation's relationship with North Korea.

Reflecting on Trump's strategy, we offer the following commentary from Dr. Pence on June 16, 2018:
When Donald Trump took office, Barack Obama told him the greatest immediate danger to the US was North Korea and their nuclear weapons. The Trump-Kim summit has walked back that threat in a dramatic breakthrough after direct one on one meetings between: 1) Kim Jong-un and the President, 2) South Korean leader Moon Jae-in and the President; 3) Chinese Supreme Leader Xi Jinping and the President, and 4) Prime Minister Abe of Japan and the President. This dramatic display of nation-to-nation, leader-to-leader discussions may redraw the entire encirclement alliances of the post WWII world. The Asian equivalent of tearing down the Berlin Wall that reunified Germany has just happened for the ancient civilization of Korea. Of course there is great uncertainty but it is the incertitude that precedes a risk for something big. Why is the minuscule so trumpeted and the profoundly significant so ignored? This can be attributed to the stunning geographical illiteracy, religious blindness, and historical ignorance of our very good looking modern journalists. The significance of this story cannot be discovered during pillow talk with cultivated sources. It can only be recognized by one who studies and reflects on strategic perspective and historical memory.

Politics is about organizing protection. Mao Tse Tung said governance comes out of the barrel of a gun. That is a well received majority opinion. Only in a handful of developed Western lands protected by agreements forged in the blood of their grandfathers is politics a continuation of high school student council campaigns and elections. Most leaders in a "rough world" came up rough. It is far better for the real leaders of the true major powers to sit down with one another and talk then stay in outmoded multinational alignments that keep the principals from talking face to face. Much more is learned and much more can be settled by Donald Trump sitting down with Vladimir Putin than making toasts with the feminist "defense minister" of Sweden while she badmouths Russia. Donald Trump's breakthrough in Korea has happened because he is developing relations with all the national leaders in Asia including Xi Jinping. It is far better to meet with the leaders of China and North Korea than organize a human rights conference with tough guy Marco Rubio so he can talk against China showing us his jutting presidential jaw in its best campaign mode against the latest threat to our way of life.

President Trump is actually proposing diplomacy over war games. He is talking to a nation man about inter-national relations before lecturing on human rights. He joins Lincoln who didn't free all the slaves at his first inauguration; Richard Nixon who didn't talk forced abortion with Mao; Pope Francis who is not lecturing the Chinese; and Ronald Reagan who spoke with the Soviets about tearing down the prison wall before listing the individual prisoners. President Trump left the white multilateralists of G7 to talk to the nationalist strong men of Asia. The diversity media scolded the President for talking to Asian bad boys instead of soothing the more familiar metrosexual leader of Canada. President Trump dared suggest that US troops in Korea are not forever. This is a strategic (and debt slashing) tsunami. President Trump met with President Kim in Singapore and evoked the independent Singapore model as a new way for Korea. The greatest international thinker of our time was the Father of Singapore. This is a serious time that would benefit if a few journalists studied the biography and speeches of Lee Kuan Yew. It would also help if religious leaders and the antiwar movement could find their old songbooks...because "All we are saying is, 'Give peace a chance'."

I. POPE FRANCIS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

MEXICAN PRIEST ARRESTED FOR MURDER: He was arrested after celebrating the man's funeral. Police suspect they were in a gay relationship.

SCANDAL IN WEST VIRGINIA: Bishop Bransfield, removed for sexual and financial abuse, gave away $350,000 to bishops and other clergy before being removed. The money has been recollected, but who was paid (bribed?) and why? One article explores how the financial abuse happened. We believe larger churches should no longer be exempt from financial transparency when maintaining non-profit status.

OPEN BORDERS CATHOLICISM: Listen to the first half and skip the second. This priest's homily opens with a good overview of border walls in the Bible. Meanwhile Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso is helping illegals cross the border into the US.

II. PRESIDENT TRUMP AND AMERICA

SALUTE TO AMERICA: President Trump led the nation in a "Salute to America" Fourth of July celebration in Washington D.C. Far from self-serving, the event was genuinely patriotic and uplifting (watch the president's speech). Meanwhile liberal protesters burned the flag and chanted, "imagine a world without America." Pat Buchanan reflects on the event and the deepening divisions between the political right and left

GEN. KEANE HELPS HALT IRAN ATTACK: Retired Gen. Jack Keane generally supports an interventionist foreign policy, but he should be given some credit on halting the near attack on Iran after the shoot down of an unarmed US drone. Appearing on Fox News June 20, Keane reminded viewers - and the President - that the US accidentally shot down an Iranian passenger jet, killing nearly 300 (including 66 children). The US never apologized. After hearing about this, Trump spoke of it often as he was making his decision. In the end he called off the attack. Remembering the past's dead saved lives today.

KAMALA HARRIS' EX-LOVER SAYS SHE CAN'T WIN: The former mayor of San Francisco, who had an ongoing affair with presidential contender, Kamala Harris, and helped get her political career started, says neither she nor the other presidential hopefuls can beat President Trump. As her campaign seems to be rising with her faux attack on Biden, we remind our readers of her falling out with her father after dishonoring her family with comments about doing drugs.

III. THE NATIONS

PUTIN DECLARES LIBERALISM IS DEAD: As the atheist West continues to commit itself to sexual chaos and demographic suicide, Putin sees the world increasingly populated by nationalist leaders like Xi Jinping, Modi, Abe, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, and Trump. Pat Buchanan reflects on Putin's statement.

WAS MORSI MURDERED? Ex-President Morsi of Egypt was elected in 2012 and removed by a coup the following year. He was later sentenced to death, but the sentence was overturned in 2016. Last month he died in court as he was being tried for espionage. His son suspects foul play. Here is an AoA reflection on Morsi and Egypt from May 23, 2015:
Egypt - Executing the Elected: The Mideast is complicated. One variant of Sunni purists are the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. They forswore violence and won a national election (51% - 48% for Mohammed Morsi as president in June 2012). They did not govern well and specifically threatened Egypt's Coptic Christians and, more importantly, questioned the favored social status of the Egyptian military. The Christians, secularists, multiple opposition groups, and the military all favored the military coup in July 2013 which overthrew the elected government of Mohamed Morsi. Army chief general Abdel Fattah el Sisi became the new President. His speech calling for a religious reexamination in the Mideast was widely praised in the West. The Saudis have supported the military coup. They never liked the Muslim Brotherhood. It favors a much more republican version of Islamic governance vs. their hereditary rule style. Qatar which has more religious freedom than Saudi Arabia was a defender of the Egyptian election and the Muslim Brotherhood. This led to a strain in relations among the Gulf monarchies. Now, President Morsi and many of his political followers have been sentenced to death. President Sisi of Egypt has helped the Gulf monarchies in their assault on the Houthis of Yemen. He has tried to win US favor in foreign policy. The execution of an elected but deposed president should not be too eagerly cheered.
BORIS IN THE LEAD: Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson face off to become Britain's next prime minister - but Boris has a strong lead. What this video to learn more about the election process.

ERDOGAN LOSES ISTANBUL: Reasons and implications.

IV. CULTURE OF LIFE, CULTURE OF PROTECTION

SHRINKING ODDS OF LIFE: A new study reveals that the habitable zone might be smaller than we had thought. We should again give thanks to God for His elective plan - from the vastness of the universe he elected this place of Earth for life and eventually for his Incarnation.

"PRIDE" (SHAMEFUL) BISHOPS: Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky has openly supported the homosexual agenda by writing a prayer in support of gay pride and seemingly asserting homosexuals were "made that way" by God. Bishop Malone of Buffalo, who attempted to place a predator gay priest in a parish with a grade school, recently said that gay priests are here to stay, falsely asserting that gay men in seminary have only to be chaste for three years before ordination. It must be recognized that there is a sin that automatically removes a priest from his apostolic brethren.

NIKE AGAINST AMERICA: Ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was able to pressure Nike to pull its American flag shoes from stores. As a Nike boycott looms, Republican Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has announced that Arizona will be withdrawing the state's financial incentives to Nike.

THE WOMEN OF SOCCER: A game between an Austrian women's soccer team against the women's soccer team of the Vatican was cancelled after Austrian players disrespectfully attacked the Church's pro-life position. We ask: why does the Vatican need a women's soccer team? Elsewhere in soccer, the women's World Cup boats around 10% openly lesbian/bi-sexual players with many more still "in the closet."

Religion and Geopolitics Review: May 6, 2017

by Dr. David Pence and A. Joseph Lynch

THE WEEKLY BRIEF

At the end of World War Two, there were huge migrations of populations especially during the partition of Pakistan and India as well as the expulsion of ethnic Germans from neighboring lands. Throughout Europe and Asia there were battles between Communists and nationalists who had resisted the Nazi or Japanese occupation and now fought each other to lead their nations. Four countries were divided: Germany, China,  Korea, and Vietnam. Three of those have been reunited, two by civil wars won by the communist side. North Korea (25 million) and South Korea (50 million) fought a stalemate war from 1950-1953 with 1.2 million battle deaths (34,000 US). Today there are still 28,000 US troops in South Korea acting as a tripwire. North Korea has a million troops to the South’s 600,000. There have been verified underground nuclear tests by North Korea in February, June, and September of 2016. The September test was the largest by far measuring 10-25 kilotons by seismic data. The nuclear bomb at Hiroshima was 15 kt and Nagasaki 20 kt.  President Obama warned President-elect Trump that his most urgent problem would be North Korea. North Korea has missiles and load to deliver 10-20 nuclear bombs over Japan and South Korea. There are 50,000 US troops in Japan and 40,0000 dependents. The North Koreans have designed but not tested a delivery missile that can go the 5500 miles to San Francisco. An actively testing nuclear armed North Korea is the most urgent national security problem facing the United States. Eventual reunification of Korea and defusing the nuclear threat of North Korea in the region is a problem that may bring Japan, China, the Phillipines and other nations of the region into a new level of cooperation. There are other scenarios just as likely and not so reassuring. Sometimes the first 100 days of a presidency have little to do with campaign promises and everything to do with the world as it really is, but wasn’t talked about. The Trump administration will not use the words of his predecessor -- "a pivot to Asia" -- but we are seeing a protector focus the group on a true threat and assemble a coalition to deal with it.

I. POPE FRANCIS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

POPE FRANCIS IN EGYPT: "'...without God the life of man would be like the heavens without the sun'. May the sun of a renewed fraternity in the name of God rise in this sun-drenched land, to be the dawn of a civilization of peace and encounter." Pope Francis at Al Azhar University in Egypt - his speech is the working document for his approach to Christian-Islamic relations. If Sunni authorities declare the works of ISIS and the Wahhabis to be outside the pale of Islam, this will give national political leaders the warrant to fight against them. Something different about Pope Francis. Something different about Egypt. Crux on the visit.

Al-Azhar University in Egypt where the Pope spoke will play an important role in defining a Sunni response to the Wahhabi version of the Hanbali school of Islamic fiqh. They are a center of authority in defining Sunni Islamic law traditions. Pope Francis came to them. He is playing on a much bigger battlefield than the Catholic conservative intellectuals who spend so much time undermining him. Here is our Mapping the Schools of Islamic Law to locate the Epicenter of Terror. Isolating the Wahhabis is the political task of nation leaders. Extending the hand of peace is the role of the Pontiff. The political leaders of nations must protect their borders and revitalize their national identities. The Pope must represent Christ, the supranational Church and humanity. He points a way of fraternity before the wars, in the midst of wars and after the wars.

RR RENO ON THE BENEDICT OPTION: Reno acknowledges many insights but stop it already.

CATHERINE OF SIENNA - A SAINT FOR OUR DAY: To love Jesus and love his Vicar on earth.

METHODISTS SAY NO TO LESBIAN BISHOP: The African and Asian Methodists are winning. The American traditional Methodists need backbone to go with their orthodoxy. The highest church court rules against lesbian bishop.

II. ISLAM AND THE MIDDLE EAST

WHERE IS PRESIDENT TRUMP HEADED IN THE MIDEAST? Pat Buchanan doesn't like what he sees.

THE SAUDI LOBBYING MONEY MACHINE ROLLS ON: Getting vets to tell their tale.

SYRIAN CHRISTIANS AND TURKEY BOMBINGS: Turkey bombs Christian area aiming for Kurds.

III. PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS AND GLOBAL ORDER

THE PRESIDENT CALLS THE SENATE: President Trump called the Senate as a body to the White House to be briefed by his top cabinet members on North Korea. This act of pulling them from the chamber that has become partisan at the expense of the polity was an effective reminder about national security and the nature of the Senate as an institution,

TUCKER CARLSON AND RICHARD DREYFUS: A surprisingly eloquent civics lesson.

RUSTY RENO ON NATIONALISM: "We need to renew solidarity, rather than encourage the dissolving trends of globalization. This means taking populist, anti-immigrant trends seriously, not denouncing them. It also means thinking hard about how to strengthen what Abraham Lincoln called our 'mystic chords of memory.' We need a Christian nationalism, one that encourages the unity of mankind while recognizing that human beings thrive best as members of a particular people and as proud recipients of a distinctive cultural inheritance." R. R. Reno is editor of First Things.

FRANCE: WHAT MAKES HER A NATION? Rogers Brusker wrote a book Citizenship in France and Germany in which he argued that French citizenship is much more a territorial state which then created a nation, while Germany was a community of descent (jus sanguine) that created a state. There is also the history of shared identity through the Francophone empire in Africa where the French language continues to play a role in public life. The Algerian is not a Turk. But is he a Frenchman? The great paradox of French citizenship is that a Catholic France could better "integrate" believing Muslims than an ethnic France committed to the strictest of laicism principles. We do not know if voting for the failed policies with a new face (Marcon) or a revival of French nationalism without religion (Le Pen) will be better for the country. That's why the French are voting and not their rulers in Brussels or friends in America. Russ Douthat on Le Pen. Very well put.

There is the atheist France founded in 1789. There is the ancient regime France of throne and altar forever lost except in the minds of some Catholic traditionalists. And there is the Catholic republican nation of Charles DeGaulle and Charles Peguy. Maybe next election there will be a candidate of that tradition.

KISSINGER ON ADENAUER: A great history lesson from Mr. Kissinger about the German chancellor who was much more interested in a Christian Europe than a German nation. Adenauer is a example of man who understood his time and circumstance. Europe does not need to repeat the strategy demanded after the devastation of World War Two and the omnipresence of the Red Army. Europe needs men of the character of de Gaulle and Adenauer to take new initiatives in bringing the nations into fraternal agreement, and this time that means Russia as well.

IV. CULTURE OF LIFE, CULTURE OF PROTECTION

THE FIRINGS AT ESPN - WHY? Good economic and cultural analysis.

PHILIP RIEFF ON CULTURE: And the personalities that carry the embedded dictates and prohibitions that make culture. From his book on The Triumph of the Therapeutic.

Religion and Geopolitics Review: Saturday, March 17

By Dr. David Pence

WEEKLY BRIEF
A Masculine American wins in Pennsylvania..turns out he is a Catholic Democrat.
Conor Lamb did not "run as a Republican" in the Pennsylvania election for the House of Representatives that he won on March 13. He is one of a growing number of young Iraq-era veterans who are coming to Congress "to replace the people who sent them there." They are mostly Democrats. Mr. Lamb ran as a soldier who had done his manly duty, and an American who would work with the elected president to do the work of the nation. He rejected Nancy Pelosi in the same way Donald Trump rejected Jeb Bush. Been there, done that... let's try something different. The Democratic Party is the natural tribal home of Catholic warriors and workingmen. How it came to lose God and masculinity is a twisted  50 year tale of hollowing out the industrial working class, promoting middle class feminists, de-Christianizing the civil rights movement, and succumbing to the power couple opportunism of Bill and Hillary Clinton. There was a time of very different Democrats before the Clinton-Obama-Clinton era. The masculine and nationalist leadership of the Kennedy brothers(John and Robert) was stopped by the bullets of a Communist atheist and a Palestinian nationalist. Their youngest brother, Ted Kennedy was not made of the same cloth. Jack Kennedy had carried men to life out of the Pacific Ocean. Ted Kennedy left a girl to die at the bottom of a Massachusetts pond. Jack Kennedy's favorite priest was ex-soldier Philip Hannon, "the Archbishop who Wore Combat Boots." Ted Kennedy's personal prelate was the notorious Washington DC cardinal and homosexual predator "Uncle Ted" McCarrick. The corruption of the Democratic Party is a religious story of Jews who quit believing in God, Protestants who embraced transgenderism and liturgical cross-dressing with female clergy, and a Catholic priesthood of big city, mostly Irish, hard drinking Democrats that was deeply corrupted by lavender predators. Conor Lamb looks different.
President Trump has broken up the Bush-McCain careerism in the Republican party, but he may end up with the neocons running foreign policy again. We will need strong American men who accept and thank Donald Trump for his presidency, but are willing to stop him from the repeated mistake of misreading friends and foes in the Mideast. American politics will be renewed when Democrats repudiate the sexual revolution by electing God-fearing masculine leaders who, tempered by war, will lead the country to peace. The return of masculine Democrats can not come too soon.

I. POPE FRANCIS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

THE POPE: ...And the campaign against sex trafficking. Five surprises after five years of his papacy by Fr Raymond de Souza.

CARDINAL MARX OF GERMANY ON BLESSING HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS: This has nothing to do with marriage. It is the incest lobby emerging within the priestly fraternity.

DIVINE PROVIDENCE: ...Still guides us.

II. ISLAM AND THE MIDDLE EAST

AFGHANISTAN: Needed - A Dialogue with the Taliban and Five Countries. The near neighbors are Pakistan and Iran. The far neighbors are Russia, China and India. All of these countries have larger stakes than the US in the region's stability.

ISRAEL PRIME MINISTER TO 18,000 AT AIPAC MAR 5, 2018. THIS IS ONE VISON OF THE MIDEAST. SHOULD THIS BE THE VSION OF THE UNITED STATES? DON'T TELL ANYONE BUT ISRAEL IS A FOREIGN POWER THAT EXERCISES A LOT MORE INFLUENCE ON AMERICAN POLICY AND ELECTIONS THAN RUSSIA EVER DREAMT OF... AND FOR MANY DECADES: Benjamin Netanyahu:
"Darkness is descending on our region. Iran is building an aggressive empire: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen, more to come. Now Iran is seeking to build permanent military bases in Syria, seeking to create a land bridge from Tehran to Tartus on the Mediterranean.

"And in addition to moving its army, its air force, its navy to Syria to be able to attack Israel from closer land, it's also seeking to develop, to build precision guided missile factories in Syria and Lebanon against Israel.

"I will not let that happen. We will not let that happen. We must stop Iran. We will stop Iran.

"Last week, we read in the Book of Esther about an earlier Persian attempt to exterminate our people. They failed then. They'll fail now..."

FORGET YOUR PRAYERS - WE NEED GUN LAWS: John Horvat on Prayer shaming. Cardinal Cupich of Chicago on prayer is not enough.

TUCKER CARLSON A SHORT SYNOPSIS ON THE DECLINE OF MALES IN AMERICA: He has begun a series on "Men in America" airing through the month of March on Wednesday's. His succinct spectacular beginning (aired March 8, 2018) and second episode in the series (aired March 14, 2018). Here is a Tucker interview with Jordan Peterson on the current crisis of masculinity.

ROD DREHER ON OPIODS, COMMUNITY AND END OF LIBERALISM: Great synthesis of different thinkers - "Everyone knows Something is Coming."

CONFISCATING THE NATION: The New York Times makes it clear: "nations are just made up."

FAKE NEWS ABOUT HOMOSEXUAL KILLINGS: The killing of Matthew Shepard and Shooting up the Pulse Disco aren't quite the stories we've been told.

SALVIFIC MASCULINITY: Clint Eastwood film 15:17 to Paris.

CHINA POLICY ON BOYS TO MEN: One Child policy led to "little emperor syndrome". Boys need risks not pampering. No reticence in China about official policy treating boys and girls differently.

EUROPE'S LEADERS HAVE NO CHILDREN: Startling fact from mid 2017.

IV. AROUND THE WORLD R&G NATIONS ROUND UP

THE GOAL IS ONE KOREA:  Not communism, not capitalism, but one Korea again after a century of occupation and then division. Let us untie this last knot of the Cold War. That means we cannot pull too hard on the old ropes. Let the nation emerge.

REAL HOPE IN NORTH KOREA AS KIM JONG-UN EXPRESSES HIS DESIRE: "To write a new chapter in the country's unification." In the search for status as a Korean statesman, the goal is to reassemble the nation. These men are Koreans - they are nationalists. His grandfather (Kim il-Sung) is considered the Father of the People's Republic. He ruled from the founding of the state in 1948 to his death in 1994. He almost succeeded in the 1950 reclamation invasion of the South which ended in the stalemate of the Korean War (1950-1953). Kim Jong-Un of the North has a very capable and willing partner in the South. Moon Jae-In is a "liberal" and a practicing Catholic. The Pope's initiative in China may be a diplomatic boon to this radically new opportunity. President Trump's clarity has certainly helped the new nationalist focus. Here are four AoA articles to help think about Korea. Asia and the Nations. Map on Monday - Korea. American targets for North Korea (scroll down to Korea and American Foreign Policy). A Unified Korea - not just for the Olympics (this includes a good linked profile of South Korean President Moon Jae-In).

GERMANY: Get rid of "fatherland" and and "brotherly" in national Anthem. No country needs to return to God the Father and the brotherhood of Lutherans and Catholics as a national accord more than Deutschland. The bitterest fruit of the Protestant revolution was the civil war of Christian Germany. The subsequent organization of a racial national identity was built on on hatred of the Jew and devotion to the pagan Fuhrer. Hitler argued that the Christians had lost their martial virtue and were rendering the fatherland unable to resist the atheistic materialism of Communism.

ITALY: On the left Luigi de Maio of the Five Star Movement  and on the right Matteo Salvini of the National League. Both anti immigrant Eurosceptics. A victory for nationalists against the globalists.

V. AMERICAN POLITICS

TILLERSON OUT, POMPEO IN: There is nothing more globalist than Exxon and no one more globalist than the corporation's top executive. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson brought to his office his incredible knowledge of the physical world and a unique understanding of the relations between states and corporations that constitutes the "global economy." He was an extremely important figure of responsibility, maturation, and loyalty to the President. As President Trump said however, they were not of the "same mind." In the first year Mr. Tillerson was a model for those who were not of the same mind as the President but served him as the President. As President Trump establishes his sea legs, he will need men much more committed to his world view to effect his policies - those include openness to Russia and hostility to Iran. Enter Mr. Pompeo who is plenty hostile to Iran. President Trump stabilized his government with strong competent patriots - from his VP to UN Representative to top generals - but all of these patriots were more globalist than nationalist. All were distinctly anti-Russian. All were loyal to the office though and protected the legitimacy of the Trump Presidency against a powerful assault. The assault has failed. Now Mr. Trump is going to hire the men who will be committed to effecting his agenda. Pompeo for Tillerson is the first necessary move.

Religion and Geopolitics Review: Saturday, June 16

By Dr. David Pence and A. Joseph Lynch

THE FACTS SHOW GUILT; THE CONCLUSIONS AND HEADLINES SAY "NOT GUILTY"

The Inspector General Report on the role of the FBI in the Hillary Clinton email case and the Russian collusion investigation of Donald Trump is a lot like the James Comey press conference on the initial FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private server as Secretary of State. The initial FBI investigation was full of details about crimes and then Comey made a stunning public conclusion that no prosecutor would prosecute them. The July 2016 headline in the NYTimes was  "FBI Director James Comey recommends no charges against Hillary Clinton on email."  The recent IG report documents pages and pages of animus toward Donald Trump and bias for Hillary Clinton. And yet it concludes there was no bias. The Times headline on the IG report is "Report criticizes Comey but finds no bias in FBI decision on Clinton."

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS: BANDWAGON WITH THE BIG GUYS DON'T ENCIRCLE WITH THE LITTLE ONES

I. SOLZHENITSYN'S HARVARD SPEECH AT 40

SOLZHENITSYN HARVARD SPEECH - 40 YEARS LATER: An excellent speech about the speech by Peter Kreeft. The speech itself.

Solzhenitsyn sees materialist capitalist individualism and Communism as two fruits of the Renaissance then Enlightenment - "rationalistic humanism, humanistic autonomy - it could also be called anthropocentricity - that man is the center of all." These are the roots of the West - which years later will be expressed in Communism and Libertarian Capitalism. Unless man returns to his spiritual roots, he will decay. Liberty must be grounded in the understanding of man as "a creature of God with obligations as well as rights." The greatest deficit in the West is civic courage. Two years later, Ronald Reagan would answer that call with a civic courage that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. But no baby boomer President could recover from the "spiritual exhaustion" which Solzhenitsyn named that day. Thus we are meeting the other cultures and civilizations which he said are more real than the bipolar construction of the Cold War. China and the Muslim World were real then and are prominent now. How shall we meet them? But what is missing for Americans is a renaissance of Christianity as the answer to the Enlightenment and the calamity of a despiritualized humanism. Solzhenitsyn concluded, We will have to rise to a new level - there is "no way left but upwards."

"Even if we are spared destruction by war, life will have to change in order not to perish on its own. We cannot avoid reassessing the fundamental definitions of human life and society. Is it true that man is above everything? Is there no Superior Spirit above him? Is it right that man’s life and society’s activities should be ruled by material expansion above all? Is it permissible to promote such expansion to the detriment of our integral spiritual life?" —Alexander Solzhenitsyn, in his June 7, 1978 Harvard University Commencement Address.  In the address, Solzhenitsyn encouraged the West not to lose its soul to the powerful temptation of materialism. This address was delivered 40 years ago this week. Solzhenitsyn died 10 years ago, in 2008, at the age of 90

"If, as claimed by humanism, man were born only to be happy, he would not be born to die. Since his body is doomed to death, his task on earth evidently must be more spiritual: not a total engrossment in everyday life, not the search for the best ways to obtain material goods and then their carefree consumption. It has to be the fulfillment of a permanent, earnest duty so that one’s life journey may become above all an experience of moral growth: to leave life a better human being than one started it." — Alexander Solzhenitsyn, from the same address.

"The turn introduced by the Renaissance was probably inevitable historically: the Middle Ages had come to a natural end by exhaustion, having become an intolerable despotic repression of man’s physical nature in favor of the spiritual one. But then we recoiled from the spirit and embraced all that is material, excessively and incommensurately. The humanistic way of thinking, which had proclaimed itself our guide, did not admit the existence of intrinsic evil in man, nor did it see any task higher than the attainment of happiness on earth. It started modern Western civilization on the dangerous trend of worshiping man and his material needs. Everything beyond physical well-being and the accumulation of material goods, all other human requirements and characteristics of a subtle and higher nature, were left outside the area of attention of state and social systems, as if human life did not have any higher meaning. Thus gaps were left open for evil, and its drafts blow freely today." — Alexander Solzhenitsyn, from the same address.

SOLZHENITSYN REFLECTS ON HOW TO TEACH THE WEST THAT MOTHER RUSSIA IS NOT THE EVIL SOVIET UNION. THE "THIRD WAVE OF EMIGRATION" FROM RUSSIA IS PAINTING THE NATION AS EVIL: "And how was I to conduct such a battle, calling for a fight to the death against Communism, yet without in any way targeting Russia? And this in a situation where wily polemicists of the Third Emigration [the wave of émigrés allowed to leave in the 1970s — NR] were not only clouding the realities of Russia with their lies, but, in an unexpected turn, were spreading the credo that the true Russia, as opposed to the Soviet Union, is a far greater danger to the West than the current benign Communist regime, which must be supported, though kept in check by maintaining adroit negotiations." -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

II. CULTURE OF LIFE, CULTURE OF PROTECTION

THE COSMIC RACE: The Americas (North and South) are meant to be the continents of the fifth race and the culmination of our human destiny as a spiritual species. The very influential Mexican thinker originating La Raza is Jose Vasconcelos (d. 1959). He wrote the Cosmic Race in 1925. With Our Lady of Guadalupe, this is the antidote to the ethnic nation.

THOSE ASIANS ARE TAKING UP ALL THE SEATS IN THE BEST SCHOOLS - FROM NYC HIGH SCHOOLS TO CALIFORNIA COLLEGES: This has to stop.

AMERICAN CULTURE IN TROUBLE: Blame it on 1968 by Steve Young. Or the assassinations of 1963-1968 by AOA.

FOR ADULTS ONLY: Daughter of sci-fi author tells her tale inside a very twisted world.

A COWARD DIES A THOUSAND TIMES, A BRAVE MAN ONLY ONCE: From William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar:
“Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, It seems to me most strange that men should fear; Seeing that death, a necessary end, Will come when it will come.”
JACK JOHNSON PARDONED AND MORE ON THE MANLY ART OF BOXING: Monsignor Rutler writes.

III. PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS AND AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY

KOREA - PRESIDENT TRUMP AND PRESIDENT KIM JONG-UN MEET IN SINGAPORE. AN INCREDIBLE MOMENT. SOME BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS: Christians in Korea see unification as ultimate goal. AOA on Korea: Geography. Whats at Stake? Asia, Armistice and Nations: A century of Korean Division. Korean Strategy in the Asian Context (Scroll down to North Korea and American Foreign Policy in an Asian context). A World of Nations: A truth at the Olympics.

IF THE GLOBALISTS' FAVORITE NATION IS ONLY IMAGINED, THEN ITS REFUGEES WILL BE FOREVER PERMANENT: Palestine as a nation is truly an "imagined community." The "refugees of Palestine" also have a very special status in the alternative universe of globalism and its conceits. Does this make sense given the huge refugee problem that besets a world still at war?

THE TRANSATLANTIC WEST IS NOT THE HEART OF OUR NATIONAL ALLIANCES: Should we be breaking up the old West or realigning the globe? Talking tough to Justin Trudeau and demanding respect for Vladimir Putin is a lot more realistic than thinking the center of our alliances should run through London, Ottawa, Brussels, and Paris instead of New Delhi, Moscow, and Bejiing. President Trump is not just a strong nationalist. He also has a much more reality-based view of the power relations with nations around the globe. President Trump acts differently toward strong leaders. He could realign our major alliances with much stronger countries than the confused Europeans. But he is not there yet. His policymakers are still organizing the West against the Great Powers (Russia, China, Iran). See below.

THE TRANSATLANTIC ALLIANCE IS THE HEART OF OUR NATIONAL ALLIANCES: A State Department official outlines a policy built on European nations accepting geopolitical realities - which name Russia, China, and Iran as chief dangers. What is the West? "...democracy, individual liberty and rule of law, ordered liberty, strong alliances separation of powers. The West is community of democracies - - Ukraine and Georgia are part of west." This is the three encirclement policy of the old foreign policy establishnent. Many people work for the President who still don't understand his very new approach to other nations.

JIMMY HOFFA SON AND HEAD OF THE TEAMSTERS IS WITH THE PRESIDENT: On steel and aluminum tariffs.

HATING TRUMP AND THE DEMISE OF JOURNALISM: Love is sometimes blind; hate is always blind and sometimes drunk. The widespread antipathy toward Donald Trump among media and government employees has deeply retarded the whole culture of the East Coast. There is outrage about FBI surveillance of NYTimes reporter twenty-something Ali Watkins showing her as a conduit for leaking by a 50+male staff member of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee. But the outrage is about government spying on reporters and curtailing their unbridled freedom to disclose (which Alexander Solzhenitsyn criticized so eloquently 40 years ago at Harvard). Ms. Atkins' competitive advantage over other reporters has not yet been labeled "cultivating sources as the new casting couch." But we know that sooner or later some sexist will so besmirch the enterprising young lady careerist. No outrage on that as of yet.

Abe Rosenthal, legendary editor of the NYTimes, immediately fired a woman reporter once he found out she was having an affair with a politician she reported on. (Barbara Walters, call your office or at least examine your conscience.). Women reporters complained to the old man. Rosenthal answered, "I don't care if you are f--- an elephant but if you are, that means you won't be covering the circus for my newspaper." The introduction of erotic interpersonal relations in the res publica is a debilitating feature of the sexually integrated publics of the power couple era. But the discreet power couples of extra marital affairs, the hidden interests and secret information is a world unto itself. Is journalism really about cultivating secret sources to get inside tales? Maybe that is why very big stories right in front of our faces like the role of Saudi Arabia in 9/11 and world wide terror are so poorly reported. It really is much more difficult to bring historical perspective, matured religious sensibility and geographical knowledge to a story than a whispered phone conversation.

ROBERT DE-NIRO AND HOLLYWOOD: A short video showing the eloquence and courage of our decadent culture makers.

POLITICS IS ABOUT CITIZENSHIP - A COVENANT OF DUTY OR A CLAMORING FOR RIGHTS: In France the debate is on as President Macron rewards an illegal immigrant with citizenship for his great bravery. Merit and duty tied to citizenship was too much for some leftists who explain things this way: "Citizenship once represented a set of rights to be demanded from the state as a form of emancipation, for example, in the civil rights and suffrage movements.”

FROM SAME ARTICLE: "Obviously, this is the polar opposite of the classical understanding of citizenship. To the ancient Greeks, and then the Romans—the latter having given us the concept of res publica, the public thing—citizenship was closely held and much prized." We would add that citizenship defined by duty was a kind of bond among men like marriage is a kind of bond between man and woman. That male bond still holds and is the real social glue under the wider citizenship shared by all men, women, and children in republics. Politics and citizenship is a religious, territorial and masculine reality especially in America.

IV. AROUND THE WORLD R&G ROUND UP

THE WAR ON YEMEN IS A WAR BY SAUDI ARABIA AGAINST NEIGHBORING SHIITES - A GOOD ONE FOR THE US TO STAY OUT OF: Blockading their last serious port to the world is going to cost a lot of lives.

ITALY FROM LEFT AND RIGHT FAVORS RELIGION AND NATION OVER EURO-GLOBALISTS: From First Things magazine. The post-WWII/post-Cold War alliances and formulations must be transformed.

Stratfor - short for Strategic Forecasting, Inc. - is a private global intelligence company that offers geopolitical insight into the interplay of nations. Stratfor has developed an excellent series of short (~2-4 minute) videos which provide the viewer with a specific nation, along with its basic history, geography, culture, and geopolitical allies and adversaries. In the following video, they present the geographic challenges facing North Korea.

PHYSICAL ECOLOGY OF KOREA: POPULOUS SOUTH, RESOURCE-RICH NORTH, UNRESOLVED WAR

by A. Joseph Lynch

The Korean Peninsula is home to almost 75 million people, with approximately 25 million living in the communist north and 50 million living in the south. The peninsula remains divided since the Korean War, which ran from 1950-1953 but has never officially been resolved. Finding itself a bridge between China and Japan, Koreans have tended to mistrust their immediate neighbors. For example, in a 2014 poll 79% of South Koreans were found to hold an unfavorable view of Japan. Nevertheless, Japan and South Korea have tenuous military relations aimed at containing China and North Korea. Although the south has double the population, the north is better endowed with natural resources including: coal, petroleum, lead, tungsten, zinc, graphite, magnesite, iron ore, copper, gold, pyrites, salt, fluorspar and hydropower.

Geopolitical tensions remain between the north and south with the resumption of war a looming possibility at all times. Although the north continues to be loud and threatening, Stratfor argues that this is a three-part "Ferocious, Weak, and Crazy" strategy that has worked well in the past. The South continues to hold a strong alliance with the United States and depends on it, along with the Japanese to some degree, for its long-term strategic security. CNN has posted some excellent videos on what a war on the peninsula may look like today along with how military officers have war-gamed an outbreak of hostilities. The results were not promising. As the US military pivots to Asia, it will need strong allies in any future regional war. Such allies must include the Christian Philippines, Sunni Muslim Indonesia, and even a militarily resurgent Japan. Or the pivot may include stepping back and  accepting the hegemony of China in the region while working to help reunify the great people of  Korea. Christianity could play a crucial role in reconciliation.

Religion and Geopolitics Review: Saturday, February 17

by Dr. David Pence and A. Joseph Lynch

THE WEEKLY BRIEF

OLYMPICS: A PARADE OF NATIONS INCLUDING A UNIFIED KOREA

When the athletes of different nations entered the stadium to open the 2018 Olympics in South Korea, the first nation as always was Greece. The Olympics tradition of political bodies competing in sports rather than war began in Greece. The rest of the teams enter in alphabetical order (the Korean alphabet) with the home team last. In this case the North and South Koreans entered under a common flag. The Americans(represented by a somber VP Mike Pence) were not happy about this show of unity. Nor has any joy been expressed over the proposed trip of the South Korean President Moon Jae-in to visit the North Korean president in North Korea. Kim Jong Un's beautiful sister Kim Yo Jung in the name of her brother made the offer. Vice President Pence basically took a knee when the unified Korean team entered the stadium. He refused to stand in respect. Learning how to conduct a nationalist foreign policy entails a new respect for the other nations as nations. We should remember one of the criticisms of our liberal State Department in 1963 against the Catholic President of South Vietnam Ngo Diem was that he seemed too willing to discuss his country's fate with North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh.

An NBC announcer who announced the deep respect Koreans have for Japan (Prime Minister Abe bravely came) had to apologize the next day as a brief synopsis of the history of the 20th century was reviewed. The ancient Korean Kingdom was occupied in 1910 by the Japanese and then divided after the defeat of Japan in 1945 into communist and free states. The bitterness of Koreans (North and South) toward the Japanese for that brutal occupation remains close to the emotional surface and  embedded in the historical memory of the Korean people.
The unification of Korea should be the goal of any truly nationalist foreign policy. This is difficult because our military is organized for global containment of China  with South Korea serving as a major encirclement base for US troops.  The Catholic president of South Korea (elected in 2017) is one of the first South Korean leaders who has  seriously rejected this paradigm. Just when Americans elect a new president who talks much tougher with the North Koreans, the South Koreans elect a president who seriously wants to talk. The whole dynamically creative scene was on display at the Olympics.

I. POPE FRANCIS, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH & AND THE CULTURE OF LIFE AND PROTECTION

LENT BEGINS: May America repent for our sins and renew our country under God.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - OUTRAGE AND IGNORANCE: It is not good if a man strikes a woman but the incredible emotional imbalance in our treatment of men, women, and children in discussing domestic violence has unhinged our discussions from reality. The most devastating domestic violence in America is the willful destruction by an adult female of her defenseless infant. This is widespread and should induce repugnance from a moral nation. Should a history of procuring an abortion preclude a person from working in national security? We will leave that to the morality squads defining unforgivable sins.

PRESIDENT TRUMP AT THE NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST: President Trump address on Feb 8, 2018. "As long as we open our eyes to God’s grace and open our hearts to God’s love, then America will forever be the land of the free, the home of the brave, and a light unto all nations."

PRESIDENT TRUMP AND FLORIDA SCHOOL SHOOTING: A PREDICTION
President Trump after his unity talks in Florida about the school shooting that left 18 dead said we must do something effective not "just say something to feel good". He said he would be meeting with state leaders. Our prediction is that he will propose a program for states or local school districts  to defend the schools with some combination of armed teachers or police. Some commentators use the term "hardening our schools." A culture of life is a culture of protection. Wherever America's kids are gathered, the grownups need an organized way to protect them with lethal force. That is usually the duty of our local police. Apparently that is not enough protection for our schools which offer a large dependably unarmed target to predators. Protecting our children in public settings  is at the heart of political duty. Masculine politics is about establishing social protection. Masculine nationalist politics is about providing maturation pathways for all young American males into our shared protective brotherhood of citizenship.  Feminist politics has been about careerism and smashing one glass ceiling after another trying to get the top job without realizing the content of that job. Political leadership is about socializing and organizing males as protector citizens not predators. That is what state militias(every male 18-65) and the right to bear arms were all about. Organize protection! Donald Trump has replaced the Lindsey Grahams and Hillary Clintons of the two parties because he gets this. There is a whole lot of American men who want to act as effective protectors not victims. That includes school teachers, coaches and custodians. No more, "Everybody Hide Beneath our Open Desks!" as the School Safety Drill.  Let America's men show our young males that their path to manhood and our maintenance of civic community are intersecting projects. One way to do that is to reestablish an armed male presence (some open, some hidden) at our schools until we have reestablished enough social order that the local police are enough again.

RUBIN, SHAPIRO, PETERSON DEBATE: One hour; three men; a discussion by three internet phenomena. Dave Rubin is openly homosexual who has left the politically correct left to host a very popular interview show. He is an open, honest, listening and penetrating interviewer. Jordan Peterson, clinical psychologist and Canadian professor (our profile here) believes there is a deep Jungian truth to Christianity. He is an honest intellectual and a great teacher. He is not a worshipping Christian but he sees its compelling truth. Even with his severe limitations as a Christian apologist he shows us the superficiality of tool much of Christian discourse. Ben Shapiro is an Orthodox Jew who deliberately tries not to use G..d or Revelation in his many debates with his leftist, politically correct enemies. His enemies are legion as are his followers. In this debate Shapiro could have made a much more vigorous assertion of the reality of God. He didn't. The three found comradeship in their intellectual honesty and internet fame. The interviewer Rubin asked an excellent question. Is there any difference between the believing Christian and the believing Jew. Does it matter? He asked the right questions that displayed the severe limitations of Jungian psychology and an Orthodox Jew trying to explain the world without G..D. These men are doing in the intellectual square what President Trump is doing in the political arena. They are fighting for a space where the truth can be told. May God bless them all. In another setting  Jordan Peterson and Jonathan Haidt discuss the nature of morality and political dialogue. They open by discussing a topic of Haidt's research and writing: What is disgust?

TONY DUNGY SAYS FAITH MATTERS IN FOOTBALL: Fellow sportswriters say that's a bridge too far.

THE ALT RIGHT AND PAGANISM: If Christians don't claim the nations, there is another group quite willing to rise that banner against the globalists. This article is not an argument for Christian nationalism (which we make at AOA) but it is an excellent resource on the pagan roots of the alt-right.

PARADOXES OF THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION: Part One - How contraceptives led to more unwanted unplanned pregnancies.

II. AMERICAN POLITICS AND THE NATIONS

THEY BELIEVE WE CAN WIN IN AFGHANISTAN: From Defense One - what the generals say.

THE US WILL STAY IN EASTERN SYRIA BASED AGAINST ASSAD AND IRAN: Not exactly a nationalist policy. Israel jet shot down in Syria. Is Syria a country with borders to be respected? Is it allowed to form its own alliances? Don't nationalists believe such prerogatives are foundational to national self determination? Syria, Russia, and Israel. Pat Buchanan asks: Is the US being sucked into Syria?

IRAN PROTESTS: What were they about? Not a protest against Iranian foreign policy.

MACEDONIA, BULGARIA, AND NATIONHOOD: The Orthodox and the nations - learning history in Macedonia.

JOHN BRENNAN - FORMER CIA HEAD NOW MSNBC CONSULTANT: Role in pushing Dossier and feud with James Comey. Role in tying Russia and Trump by Paul Sperry at Real Clear Investigations.

Religion and Geopolitics Review: Saturday, August 19

by Dr. David Pence and A. Joseph Lynch

THE WEEKLY BRIEF
CHARLOTTESVILLE AND RACE : IS NATIONALISM
 THE PROBLEM OR THE SOLUTION?
A Charlottesville resident Jason Kessler organized a Unite the Right rally in his town on Saturday Aug 12 to gather around the statue of Robert E Lee in Emancipation Park (renamed from Lee Park in June 2017) to protest the decision of the City Council (Feb 6,2017) to remove the statue. Like the old leftist United Front campaigns, this was meant to garner wide support for a popular cause while giving cover to organizations with deeper ideological commitments(to white supremacy, racial purity, anti Jewish theories). Part of these groups are "white identitarians" who demand in the world of diversity identities to have one of their own. On Friday evening before the demonstration there was a dramatic torch parade led by the white supremacist anti Jewish forces through the campus of UVA. The best reporting of this was done by VICE news. This woman is a true reporter letting the participants tell the story by speaking themselves.

The leftist counter protesters had a permit for a neighboring park but brought their group close enough to direct their outrage at the the rightists. CNN has a good report on ANTIFA.  Here is a tribute to ANTIFA from  minsters who say ANTIFA  saved their lives. The counter protesters had multiple Communist and old left sponsors but identifying that sponsoring list is difficult to find in most news stories. (except for NYTimes behind a paywall).    The Governor declared the city in a state of emergency a few minutes after the demonstration was to start. The role of the police in keeping the peace is in dispute. There is significant evidence that the same troubling tendency of urban police to stand back as leftist protesters use violence against "the right" was a major part of the whole story in Charlottesville. What is different here from Trump rallies and college speeches by Ann Coulter is that many elements of the Unite the Right came prepared to fight back. With no police in between, they had plenty of opportunities.  James Alex Fields of Ohio is under arrest after driving his car into large group of the counter protesters and killing a 32 y.o. woman, Heather Heyer. Was the driver trying to kill as many people as possible or was he in fear of a Reginald Denny incident? That will be the question at his trial.  He was fatherless from childhood and has a significant history of violence and racism.

President Trump in his first press conference on the day of the violence condemned bigotry, hate and violence on both sides. At his next press conference, he condemned neo nazis and white supremacists specifically but again said there was violence on both sides and that there were plenty of good people opposed to removing statues of Robert E Lee from our public spaces. "Where will it end?  ...Washington? ... Jefferson?" .   None of this has been enough for the mainstream and neoconservative "never Trump" media. They tell a narrative of  Donald Trump supporting white supremacy and white supremacists supporting Donald Trump. The media have been repetitive in publicizing a David Duke tweet thanking the President for calling out left wing violence. This was reported as definitive proof that white supremacists are Trump men and Trump is in his heart  one of them.  Watch the VICE video though and see how white supremacists are anti Trump and livid that he would betray the race by allowing "his beautiful daughter" to marry the Jew Jared Kushner. That disavowal of Trump by a major racist player in the protest has yet to be noted by most media.
The alt right is a very loose term for all conservatives and libertarians who used the internet and alternative(alt) media to take on the "fake right" which they defined as the Republican party of Bob Dole and George Bush and the neocon saturated Fox News. Plenty of white racists include themselves in this broad term and in fact enjoy the big tent hiding space. But to call the alt right a white supremacist movement would be like calling  the US labor struggle a Trotskyite movement.  Ever since Donald Trump presented himself for the Presidency,  there has been a concerted widespread movement to identify American nationalism with racism. There are ethnic nationalists like Pat Buchanan who accept that label  without the Nazi addendum.  But there is a much bigger movement of American nationalists who believe that our borders define a territorial community which includes  every color and class--this is called civic nationalism. It was the creed of both John F Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The southern military tradition that fought for the Confederacy has also bled for the Union in the American revolution and disproportionally in our wars of the 20th century. Those statues have been redeemed by the blood of Southern soldier patriots. Those honored civic patriots can teach all of our young men about manly duty and the fraternity of citizenship. As Robert Lee knew, patriotism begins with the land around you. His example can help educate our young men who have been  tricked by black power and now are deceived by white power. They need to think like mature men-like protectors of a shared space and bounded community. That is what our cities and states as well as our nation really are.

Black men and white men have carried our American flag and have died for it. We are American brothers under God.   Religious, civic, economic and territorial nationalism is not the enemy. There is a message here  for the Ivy League globalists who scoff at their unwashed countrymen to network with their white Swedish and Canadian counterparts in the media, universities and high finance. Quit defacing our flag by equating nationalism with white racism! Your careers in the WASPish power couple empire are not as important as jobs for black, brown and white men who work with their hands. Quit inflaming the men who will fight and do physical work  by deliberately confusing the discussion of national loyalty and identity. We must reorient our loves to God and country.  Only such a communal identity and purpose can socialize young males from the temptations of drug use, promiscuity and predation. Love of nation under God and a decent respect for the office of the Presidency is not the problem. It is the religious and interracial solution to the atheistic chaos of our troubled times. It is especially needed for our young men in search of that transcendent  communal duty which gives them their identity as men. Charlottesville is a great place to start talking about that.

I. POPE FRANCIS AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

MARRIAGE AND CATHOLIC LAW: Excellent article. Here is one of the comparisons of Canon Law 1917 and Canon Law 1983. Consent is called the “efficient cause” of marriage. Without it, there is no marriage. The Catechism explains it well:
1. 1626: “The Church holds the exchange of consent between the spouses to be the indispensable element that ‘makes marriage.’ If consent is lacking, there is no marriage.”

2. It has been a shift the 1983 Code took from its predecessor, the 1917 Pio-Benedictine Code in this particular issue.
Let’s go back to the wording. The new Canon says that the content of marriage consent is the act of the will of a man and a woman to give and accept each other (as spouses) to establish marriage. Compare it to the previous wording of the 1917 Code, where it was established that marriage consent was the act of the will where the parties agreed to give and accept the rights to the body (ius ad corpus), perpetual and exclusive, for the purpose of performing the actions apt by their nature to procreate children. This is an example of the iuscorporalism that prevailed in the 1917 Code. The new Code reflects the vision of Vatican II, a personalist one. You accept the other person as your spouse, not merely a perpetual and exclusive right over his/her body to have children.

II. ISLAM AND THE MIDDLE EAST

AFGHANISTAN - AN EXCELLENT HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF OUR PRESENT PREDICAMENT. POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS WERE LESS HELPFUL BECAUSE ROLES FOR INDIA (OF THE "OUTER CIRCLE") AND IRAN (OF THE "INNER CIRCLE") WERE LEFT UNDEVELOPED: The Brookings report with good maps and dialogue format. Especially heed Bruce Reidel. Missing is a better discussion of a role for Iran. Iran is the western neighbor of Afghanistan. A water dispute is a present issue of contention. But there are much deeper ties between the neighbors, especially from central Afghanistan. Iran fought with the the US and Afghans in ousting Al Qaeda. But the long term resilience of the Taliban has led Iran to grant them some eastern hegemony as the Iranians' link to the Hazara in the central part of the country was well as the main government. The Hazaras are the third largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. They speak a Persian language variant and are overwhelmingly Shiite. What the Afghan Pashtuns are to Pakistan and southeast Afghanistan so are the Hazaras to Iran.

A few excepts from the discussion:
JOHN ALLEN: On the similarity of Taliban in Afghanistan and leftist revolutionaries in Columbia. ...the forensics on the Taliban as a threat. I would propose to you that the threat is a triangular one, where you have the ideological insurgency; you have, very importantly and perhaps even more prominent, the criminal patronage networks; and then you have the drug enterprise that fuels both of the first two. These three aspects of the threat have been present the entire time.

BRUCE RIEDEL: The Afghan Taliban is very resilient for many reasons, one of which is that they represent the aspirations in the Pashtun community—not all of the Pashtun community, but a significant portion of it. They also have successfully portrayed themselves as fighting against foreign interference—in particular, non-Muslim interference; this is why one of the problems of our allied force posture in Afghanistan is that there are always too many Christians and not enough Muslims, and it’s unlikely we are going to be able to fix that problem any time in the future. So the Taliban’s appeals to deeply-rooted Pashtun interests, to nationalism, and to Islamic values all at once, are an important part of their resilience.

But in my view, none of this would be as dangerous as it is if the Taliban didn’t have safe haven and sanctuary in Pakistan—and confidence that, no matter what we do to them in Afghanistan, they can reconstitute. It’s not just the Pakistani intelligence services; there is a sizeable part of the Islamic clerical establishment in Pakistan that is openly supportive of the Afghan Taliban, and sees the conflict as a righteous and holy war, and therefore facilitates fundraising in Pakistan, and even more fundraising in Dubai. While I think there’s a lot of fundraising in Saudi Arabia, Dubai seems to be at the heart of it.

So if these are the sources of the Afghan Taliban’s resilience, then we have to ask ourselves what among those things we can fundamentally change? We are not going to change Pashtun identity—not in 10 years, not in 20 years, not in 200 years.

BRUCE RIEDEL: The Saudis have some leverage in Pakistan. But they have lost the influence they once had due to the war in Yemen. Two years ago, Pakistan’s parliament voted unanimously to reject Saudi requests for Pakistani troops to fight in Yemen. Criticism of the kingdom has become widespread. So I’m skeptical that the Saudis will be a player. China is the most important player for the Pakistani military.

BRUCE RIEDEL: It seems to me there have been two concentric circles here. The outer circle is huge, and it includes Japan, Russia, China, India, the Gulf countries, and the Europeans. We have engaged fitfully with those partners. Former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke succeeded in creating a counterpart in nearly every one of those countries—and the few who still endure are desperate to find someone to talk to in Washington. That engagement is well worth doing and important to do. But it’s an outer circle.

The inner circle features the two countries—Pakistan and Iran—that have the longest borders with Afghanistan. One of our problems all along has been that one of those countries is beyond the pale. The one period where we were actually making a lot of progress quickly is 2002, when we enlisted the Iranians as a co-partner in Afghanistan. But if the current administration has now determined that Iran is the number-one threat to world peace, I don’t see how we’re going to get much help there. In fact, I already see signs that the Iranians are looking at Afghanistan as one of the places to stick it to the Americans if they want to pursue a significant anti-Iran policy; Iraq, obviously, is another. There’s a definite uptick in Iranian interaction with the Afghan Taliban, and that’s not good.

Then there’s Pakistan. There is no single Pakistani policy on Afghanistan; there are multiple Pakistani policies. Even within the Pakistani army, there are multiple Pakistani army policies on Afghanistan. I’ll save the “what-to-do-about-Pakistan” part of this until we get to policy recommendations. But I think the Iran problem is a big hole here, and it’s going to get worse.
CONGRESS AND AFGHANISTAN - ISN'T THAT ONE OF THEIR JOBS? Andrew Bacevich reminds Congress that Afghanistan is their Vietnam.

PAKISTAN - A LEADER DISPLACED:
One brother out, another brother in.

III. NORTH KOREA AND AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY IN ASIA

KOREA: ULTIMATELY IT IS A QUESTION OF WHOSE SIDE IS CHINA ON? Trump is clear about the consequences of any incursion on American soil (which means Guam most of all). Tillerson proposes diplomacy to escape the inevitable fury of war. Standard American Jacksonian foreign policy. A good history lesson. David Ignatius unlike so many journalists understands history and it often shows in his writing about foreign policy. Graham Allison of Harvard has written on the likelihood of a US-China war. He sees the North Korean crisis in terms of a war with China. That is how every president saw it until the last decade and we should see it now. Mark Bowden lists options with Korea. None are good; some are catastrophic. From our Map on Monday series: Korea.

American targets for North Korea. US footprint. In South Korea there are 30,000 troops with 200,000 Americans in the whole country. Most of the troops are in the 35 mile area between the DMZ (165-mile boundary between North and South Korea) and Seoul, the South Korean capital with 25 million people in the metro area. There are 50,000 American troops in Japan. Half are on Okinawa, a Japanese island 470 square miles in size 1000 miles from North Korea. The US forces are not universally welcome (an understatement). There are another 50,000 American civilians throughout Japan.

Guam is a US territory unlike the bases our military and civilians occupy in South Korea and Japan. Guam has an 85% Catholic population (like their Philippine neighbors, this is a gift from their Spanish heritage). The target in Guam is not just the 4,000 military personnel and Anderson Airbase. The 160,000 US citizens who live there do not appreciate the way they have been discussed in the press. They are part of the Mariannas island chain (WWII marines remember Tinian and Saipan especially). The 53,000 commonwealth residents of North Marriannas qualify to be US citizens.

North Korea will not target the South Korean population. Their first target will be American military bases and ships, then possibly the American citizen population on Guam. North Korea must establish this as a fight between Asian nations and the American imperialist. "America wants your nuclear weapons," they will tell Pakistan and India. Look what happened to Gadaffi after he gave up his weapons and see how well the Iran nuclear deal is going for the Iranians who turned over weapons grade uranium. Asian nations all cheered when tiny Japan beat Russia in 1905. On August 10, 2017 the US provoked China by sailing within 12 miles of a Chinese naval island they built off their own coast in the South China Sea for border defense. The Chinese see the US threats to North Korea in light of a 200-year history of western powers meddling in the lives of the nations of the East. There is a possibility that China could help the US resolve this matter but the likelihood is that China will see the US disarmament project as quite self serving as the US threatens the much more modest defense building of China. Henry Kissinger has reminded us in his must-read China that the one issue China will go to war over is infringing on their borders or threatening their near neighbors (see Korean War 1950-53).

GUAM, THE PHILIPPINES, AND THE CARELESS APPROACH OF THE CATHOLIC HIERARCHY TO THE NATIVE BOYS OF ASIA: Their Catholic Church in Guam is in "episcopal receivership" after the Archbishop was relieved of his duties by Pope Francis in 2016. There has been a long history of homosexual clerical collusion at the highest levels in abuse of young males - many more male teens as usual than small children. This is mindful of the other Catholic Asian country we once counted as an American ally. Their Catholic clergy was also corrupt in these matters. The new President of the Philippines talked about this in a compelling interview on his leadership and his new foreign policy alliances with Russia and China. His experiences as an abuse victim of Catholic clergy is part of his sensibility that the US and Europe speak with a double tongue. He says the clergy didn't take seriously the abuse of native boys. He closed that part of the interview with this: "Let me clear. I believe in God but not in priests."

JAPAN - THE RISE OF NATIONALISM: A critical video, but there is plenty here to learn from. Vox is left wing but often very reliable source of news based on history.

DUTERTE INTERVIEW ON USE OF VIOLENCE AS A RULER: Interview on his "predicament of facing large contamination of drugs against children and country." He says America speaks with double talk, so does EU. So he seeks China and Russia as allies.

IV. CULTURE OF LIFE, CULTURE OF PROTECTION

ST LOUIS - A KING AND A RULER: We need many more heroes and tales of men of authority. Without just men who will physically protect, the weak will always be vulnerable and the poor always oppressed. Without authority, there is no community.

THE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE OF FEMINIST DEMOCRATIC HAWKS AND REPUBLICAN NEOCONS: The female editor of Nation magazine has the best analysis of the anti-Trump Washington establishment driving us to war with Russia and Iran.

AT GOOGLE, A YOUNG MAN JAMES DAMORE WRITES A MEMO POSITING THERE ARE BIOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GENDERS WHICH MAY BE A BETTER EXPLANATION OF MALE PREPONDERANCE IN TECH INDUSTRIES THAN SEXISM: He was fired as a heretic against the abiding state religion of Diversity enforced primarily by Google, large corporations, and government employers through human resource firing practices. This "your job or your soul " blackmail is rampant in the national military as well as state and local law enforcement agencies. This human resource strategy has been one of the few enforceable ethics/thought systems which have transcended tenure claims in universities. His full memo with citations.

This recalls the firing of once Harvard President Lawrence Summers. He too thought gender differences might explain the lack of females in the highest positions in mathematics and engineering fields. His suggestions were mild. His punishment swift. Summers had an interesting relationship with Elena Kagan at Harvard. Though he first opened a big door for her, female careerists did a lot better than men who spoke too freely. Under now Supreme Court Justice Kagan, the US military was never given the fast track access that has marked her remarkable career rise.

His treatment is a prime example of ritual defamation. He is right about gender differences. "The no gender differences crowd are the young earth proponents of the left."
